The Ohio State University Chapter is getting really excited for our departure to Quito, Ecuador this Friday. We’ve been preparing for months, and it’s finally time to see what Triple Salto has in store for us. Triple Salto is a nonprofit organization in Ecuador that works to combat malnourishment and provide sustainable ways to generate income in the local communities. The plan for our chapter is to help build multiple greenhouses and compost wormeries for families around the area. Being that no one on our team has ever built a greenhouse before, this is going to be an amazing learning experience for all of us.
Right now the members of our project team are packing and doing last minute preparations before our flight leaves from Cincinnati early Friday morning. After that we are expecting about 13 hours of traveling before we meet our project coordinator Alicia in Quito.
To prepare for the project, our team decided to pick out important topics to research including climate, culture, greenhouses, compost wormeries, language, geography, history, and government. For several weeks we held special meetings to present our findings on each topic to the group. In addition to presenting our findings, Grace and Jorge (two very important members of our OSU Nourish family), gave our team Spanish lessons. While we tried our best to learn the basics of the Spanish language, we all rest easy knowing that Jorge, our friend from Puerto Rico who is completely fluent in Spanish, will be right there in Ecuador to help when need be. Our team also attended a values workshop to help us understand how we could best work with one another on the trip. We had a lot of fun learning about ourselves and our values during the workshop.
Four days until we leave and it’s already difficult to sleep from excitement. Hopefully by next week we’ll have some great experiences to share with everyone here at home!
