Student Spotlight: University of Kansas Chapter Leader | Nourish International

February 23, 2012 | Posted in Chapter Updates, Nourish Office, Student Spotlight | By

This week, Nourish would like to recognize Adam Nicholson, the Chapter Leader and Chapter Founder of the University of Kansas Chapter!

What makes you passionate about Nourish?
I’ve always been passionate about people. My dad raised me to love people of all types and one of my favorite things has always been making people laugh or making them smile. I want to make the world a better place so that I can see the smiles on the faces of the people I helped and know that I helped put it there.  Nourish gives me a really great vehicle to be able to be creative and engage complex problems on a really approachable level. There’s a great network of mentors and fellow students and so it’s really a perfect environment for someone to better themselves.

What is one of your favorite memories of working with Nourish?
The Summer Institute was amazing. The best part was just getting to meet so many different, amazing people, especially the mentors. There was just something so powerful about that many people being in the same place, focused on accomplishing the same goal.  Founding a Nourish Chapter is a memory that will also stick with me forever. It’s a whirlwind, that’s for sure. I can’t narrow it down to a single moment, but the whole process is just insane. It’s amazing and frustrating and rewarding all at the same time.

What career path are you interested in? How do you think Nourish will prepare you for that possible career?
I’m hoping to get my PhD in Sociology. I haven’t narrowed down my research yet, but broadly speaking I’m interested in social class, stratification, economic inequalities, etc. The issues that I’m concerned about are what we deal with when we research our International Projects. Each project is unique because it has found a unique way to address poverty as it presents itself in that specific area. As a researcher, I want to know what sort of structures are creating the system of poverty that the people are living in.  I’m also very interested in working with NGOs and Non-Profits, so working with Nourish is a great introduction. I’d love to continue to be involved with Nourish after my time at Kansas is over.

Check this great video of Adam and the KU Nourish Chapter being featured in their school newspaper!
